Our team at the New York Amsterdam News is again invited to Los Angeles to cover the 2018 Oscar Celebration, which will be telecast live on ABC Sunday, March 4 at 5 p.m., PT/8 p.m., ET.
It’s the film industry’s biggest night and it’s almost here. The Oscar nominations will be live-streamed, with Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis hosting the nomination ceremony. Also on hand were special guests Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Priyanka Chopra, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Molly Shannon, Rebel Wilson and Michelle Yeoh.
The nominations begin with cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short film, live action short film, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.
To keep the suspense going until the bitter end at 5:38 a.m., PT/8:38 a.m., ET, the nominees were announced for actor in a leading role, actor in a supporting role, actress in a leading role, actress in a supporting role, animated feature film, directing, documentary feature, documentary short subject, foreign language film, original song, best picture, adapted screenplay and original screenplay.
There was a sound of joy (you heard it) when the contributions in film, made by Black and Brown storytellers, were announced. That included “Dear Basketball” by Kobe Bryant under Best Animated Short Film. Then it started getting better, with a nomination under Best Documentary Feature for “Strong Island” followed by Best Adapted Screenplay, “MudBound”; Best Original Screenplay, “The Big Sick,” “Get Out” and “The Shape of Water”; Best Actor in a Leading role, Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” and Daniel Kaluuya, “Get Out”; Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound” and Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”; and Best Director, Jordan Peel, “Get Out” and Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water.”
And finally the one that really shook the house: Best Picture for “Get Out” and “The Shape of Water.”
