District Council 37 officials announced endorsements this month for the New York State attorney general race and the New York State comptroller race.
Officials at the municipal employee union announced that they had endorsed New York City Public Advocate Letitia James for attorney general and New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli for re-election. Both candidates were endorsed by DC 37 delegates, the largest governing body at the union.
Both James and DiNapoli were happy to accept DC37’s endorsement.
“DC 37 is a powerful voice for working families, and I am proud to have their support,” said James in a statement. “From serving our municipal government, to keeping our hospitals and schools running, DC 37 members are a crucial part of New York. As attorney general, I will continue to stand up for the rights of working people in every corner of our state.”
“Every day, the hardworking women and men of DC37 provide vital services that keep New York City functioning and its families safe,” said DiNapoli in a statement. “They do the often unrecognized work that lets New York City grow, and I am honored to have their support. As workers’ rights, wages and benefits are under attack as never before, I will always stand by my friends in labor to fight for what’s right.”
James has already received endorsements from New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, Communications Workers of American District 1 and 32BJ SEIU. For DiNapoli, this endorsement comes right after receiving one from the Working Families Party.
The WFP hasn’t endorsed James because according to a report from The New York Times, Cuomo allegedly advised James not to run on their ticket because of their endorsement of Cynthia Nixon for governor.
Nevertheless, regardless of that drama, DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido is pleased with his delegates’ choices.
“We enthusiastically support Tom DiNapoli and Letitia James because they have consistently addressed the issues that are of utmost importance to our members and the working men and women of our state,” said Garrido in a statement. “Time and again, Comptroller DiNapoli and Public Advocate James have demonstrated their commitment to public service, workers’ rights and improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. With these endorsements, we stand ready to engage and mobilize membership on their behalf.”
