The Black man’s vote

Nothing has been more visibly elusive in American politics than the Black man’s vote.

Nothing has been more visibly elusive in American politics than the Black man’s vote. Many political predators have coveted, hunted and preyed upon this seemingly extinct species with relentless, yet hopeful, aspirations of snaring said game. Unfortunately, it appears as if no elected official has been cunning enough to seize this heavily sought out bloc of unimaginable potential.

It is the opinion of this scribe that far too many of us Black men fail to weigh the gravity of our political nonchalance. Our diet of indifference chewed with our appetite for apathy is having such an adverse, nauseating effect on our communities that it’s becoming nearly impossible for many to stomach. Our inactivity is shedding pounds and pounds of influence from a body of minorities who are already marginalized.

During the turbulent 1960s, Malcolm X predicted that our future/freedom would only be realized through either the ballot or the bullet. His vision was perfect because in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was enacted into law. So, yeah, in ’65 Malcolm helped us get the ballots. Unfortunately, also in ’65, for his loyal service and selfless sacrifices to Black people, some shooters decided to give Malcolm the bullets.

Now here we are, a half-century later, confronted with the same options: ballots or the bullets. Unfortunately, a few things have changed. For example, the Clinton Crime Bill of 1994 created so many African-American felons that millions of us lost our rights to the ballots and the bullets. In other words, we were not only politically neutered but also brought to a defenseless heel, not a far leap from enslavement. African-Americans comprise only 12 percent of the American population and 5 million adults are restricted from voting along with the millions of incarcerated souls of Black folks.

Black men, we have to do something! The handwriting is on the wall. How long can we expect good white people to continue to protect us from bad white people? I mean, I would be scared, too, if knew that Russia’s President Putin impregnated the White House and birthed a Russian operative named Trump.

And we all know how Russia feels about people of color. So, I beseech all Blacks who are eligible to vote, to please do so. If not, things might get so bad that the light, bright, damn near white Shaun King won’t be able to convince Putin and/or Trump that Black lives matter.
