On Tuesday, April 2, Los Angeles police announced that they arrested 29-year-old Eric Holder, the suspected killer of Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Nipsey Hussle, who was murdered the afternoon of March 31 outside his “Marathon Clothing” store after a “personal dispute.” A tip led to the arrest after the suspect was spotted in Bellflower, 20 miles from the shooting scene. He was transported to Los Angeles and booked on murder charges. Two other men were wounded with non-life-threatening injuries.
During a Tuesday press conference, LAPD Chief Michael R. Moore said: “We believe this to be a dispute between Mr. Hussle and Mr. Holder. It appears to be a personal matter between the two of them,” he said. Moore added that Holder is believed to be a member of a gang, but the murder does not appear to be gang related and that Holder appeared in front of Hussle’s store more than once before shooting him.
LAPD Commissioner Steve Soboroff read a letter Nipsey Hussle wrote to the LAPD, and said Hussle had a scheduled meeting the following day with himself, Chief Michel Moore and his label, Roc Nation, where they were to discuss remedies for curbing gang violence. Soboroff said, “The meeting will happen. I want to help what he wanted to do.”
Mayor Eric Garcetti said, “This has been a tough few days for Los Angeles. Nipsey Hussle was an artist who touched our city and the lives far beyond the City of Angels and this world.” He called Hussle “a tireless advocate of the people of this city and this world. His impact on our city was deep.”
In an Instagram post, Hussle’s longtime girlfriend, Lauren London, said: “I am completely lost. I’ve lost my best friend. My sanctuary. My protector. My soul. I’m lost without you. We are lost without you babe. I have no words.”
Reports state that 19 people were hospitalized Monday night when approximately 300 people outside Hussle’s store gathered during a vigil suddenly stampeded from the area. Los Angeles Police Department representative, Meghan Aguilar, revealed there was “mass panic and chaos,” at around 8:10 p.m. There was no initial word on what set it off.
Hussle, whose government name was Ermias Joseph Asghedom, was well-known and respected for his community outreach in South Los Angeles, and was being remembered for his music as well as his devoted community activism.
Basketball stars LeBron James and Russell Westbrook tweeted messages of condolences.
Hussle was shot in the head and torso, according to a Monday report from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
