Summer league youth basketball is concluding here in the boroughs. The Slam Jam Summer Classic is one of those leagues who’ve closed it down for the 2019 season.

Two champions prevailed. Team Crate from Far Rockaway coached by Sean Scott in the 12 and under division and the NYC Lady Bulldogs, repping Queens, coached by Billy Pellicane in the 14 and

under division.

Led by MVP Tierra Hendricks (8 points), Team Crate had an easy time securing their trophy, defeating the NJ Lady Pirates 34-17, holding the Pirates to half of their total score.

The Lady Bulldogs, defending champions, had a harder time gaining victory. The Lady Pirates, also players in the 14 and under division, this team coached by Eddie Torres, matched the Bulldogs 40-plus points to the end, but came up short by two, losing the championship 46-44.

Voted MVP, Gabriela D’Ambrosio led the Lady Bulldogs with a team high 13 points. Faith Robinson’s game high 15 points led

the Lady Pirates.

Eleven teams participated. Five in the 12 and under, six in the 14s. Tournament Director Rochelle Murphy noted the impressive talent that not only played in the championships like 12 and under Sportsmanship winner Janiyah Dunmore of the Pirates and teammate Paradise Fisher who dropped 11 points, but those who also competed during the summer.

“I was most impressed by 10-year-old Khylee Grullon, who played for Hoopers NY,” said Murphy. “She was the pure definition of how a player should play in order to be successful, to get the ultimate prize. A college scholarship.”
