Made In Africa S/S 2020 will hit the NYFW runways at Pier 50 Studios on Sept. 5, 2019 at 5 p.m. For the company’s first time showing in NYC, they will introduce runway presentations from two contemporary African designers Maxhosa Africa and Eliana Murargy. As a means to beautification and body adornment, each grouping will highlight the African connection between clothing, culture, tradition and aesthetics. With an embodiment of creativity and expression, Made In Africa will show spiritual and cultural meaning in their designs that reflect the artistry derived from deep African ancestral roots.
“Truly a great artistry is not achieved through knowledge or mastery alone, but, by divine inspiration from those who have come before,” said Paul Leisegang, creative director. “Their spirit lives through the hands and souls of our modern African ateliers.”
For Laduma Ngxokolo, founder/designer of Maxhosa Africa, the collection showcases the cultural roots and traditions of Africa. Each of his garments reflects a modern, current aesthetic showing off the ancient philosophy behind his brand. His clothes are designed and influenced by rich African heritage and ceremony.
Maxhosa Africa creates fashion and design landscapes across Africa. Exceptional craftsmanship and haute couture designs have captured the hearts of South Africans. A descendant of the Mpondo clan, this designer grew up in the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth. Ngxokolo’s inspiration stemmed from traditions and arts of his native culture. Honing his craft, he earned a master’s degree in Material Futures from the University of London. He has also been honored by celebrities such as Beyoncé, Bill Gates and dubbed as an outstanding African designer. Working also in home design, his global, fashion and lifestyle brand includes a piece in IKEA.
Eliana Murargy’s designs celebrate the timeless signature of the studio, in tandem with the gentle nature of female embodiment, healing, empowerment, with a day-to-evening collection which balances fine tailoring and refined fit via flowing shapes, detailed silhouettes, with soft shadings of rose, beige, wide array of blues, vivid sparkles, delicate silks, touches of silvery textures, and pink accents in tandem with stark white
Launching her studio in 2011, Murargy presents a global, lifestyle brand that embraces strong African roots. Her luxurious pieces target a strong, modern woman who exudes an unforgettable sense of natural beauty that comes from deep within. The grouping embraces local inspiration, mixed with a globally relevant aura, intricate styling and high-fashioned details.
According to Leisegang, “Made in Africa is an invitational sense and an experience of the culturally appropriate, magical experience of African fashions.”
