Harlem resident and nation’s oldest living person Alelia Murphy turns 114

At age 114, the community gathered on Saturday to wish a happy birthday to Alelia Murphy.
The celebration, hosted by State Sen. Brian Benjamin, took place at the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building art gallery. The event also recognized Murphy as the oldest living person in the United States.
Born in 1905, Murphy is originally from Grifton, N.C. and has lived in Harlem for the last 60 years. She is the last living of 12 siblings and her immediate family consists of two children, three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
