Jam-packed was the Mother’s Day R&B concert at the Barclays Center on Friday, May 10.
As if flowers given to ladies in the audience by smooth dulcet-toned Raheem DeVaughn wasn’t enough to proclaim the evening a success, A.T. Mitchell of Brooklyn-based community support organization Man Up Inc. treated the women of Man Up Inc. or WOMAN UP! to the Mother’s Day concert.Terry Norfleet, Director of Programs. In a suite on high dancing up a storm, the moms were able relax and party for a good few hours feeling like they had been appreciated. What a treat the audience was in for—real music all night. DeVaughn kicked off the proceedings, just lovely with his solid and beautiful selection. Avant could sing the phonebook if he wanted to, as easy flowing and strong as his vocals were. He really didn’t want to leave they stage. Joe was old school cool with his performance. Audience participation was much required, and eagerly given. Tight. With hints of Beyonce-esque imagery and moves almost, Ashanti nonetheless proved her longevity with a committed and energetic performance. Monica is a clear veteran, a star since he was 14 years old; this mom of three owned the stage. This, despite technical difficulties as she sang.
The ghosts in the machine jumped into Jaheim’s set, too. He also shrugged them off and sang right through the sound issues. He capped off the night and the crowd of grownfolk music lovers loved it. The 4th annual Mother’s Day Good Music Festival Weekend concluded the following night with Erykah Badu and H.E.R. Nice selection.
