Every season, the Council of Aspiring American Fashion Designers (CAAFD) hand-picks some of the finest talents in the global fashion industry. This season, they made no exception. For the best unveiled and curated brands, the stage was set with glittering runways. Talented models cruised the runways in elegant fashions. Once again, CAAFD partnered with IMG and Pier59 Studios to present various showcases featuring unique designers.
CAAFD is a charitable organization founded through a collaborative effort by a few key pioneers in the fashion industry. Its primary goal is to back designers who aspire to do business in the United States.
The collective was filled with intense style and elegance. In collaboration with Fashion Network, CAAFD unveiled a group of distinctively emerging brands from various parts of the world. These showcased designers included Moon Chang, Sweta Agrawal’s “A Humming Way,” Farida Tamraz’s “Tamraza,” Maria Sonia, Kadri Klampe’s “Yufash,” and Phoenix Ba.
First prize winner Moon Chang is New York-based. She earned her MFA at FIT in 2019. Her S/S 2020 collection, “Hybrid Beauty” kicked off with Moon Chang’s personal story featuring her part-time student design experience. It was a tale of Moon in Shanghai, with “being cute” as the theme. Details included ribbons, ruffles, silk, velvet and molded flowers. These accents were a perfect blend of the 17th and 18th-century couture and the modern version as a hybrid. The look was romantic.
“A Humming Way,” the theme of Sweta Agrawal’s collection, describes elegance and classic aesthetics. Inspired by travels and a rich Rajasthani heritage, as a teenager she often designed her own clothes. Sweta’s designs appeal to the strong and confident Indian woman.
Egyptian designer Farida Temraz’s “Temraza,” stands out with haute couture collection of women’s ready-to-wear, evening wear, and bridal dresses.
María Sonia merges the art of handmade crafts such as Nanduti lace (spider web in Guaraní), Encaje Ju (needle lace) and rustic handmade laces that are the heritage of Guaraní culture. She works with Gaza, tulle, organza, taffeta and takes a bit of Paraguayan history to every part of the world.
Estonian-born Kadri Klampe is the founder and designer of “Yufash.” This forward-thinking brand caters to unique, confident and powerful women. All garments are fabricated exclusively in England.
Phoenix Ba, a Toronto-based fashion designer, specializes in one-of-a-kind women’s formal, occasional, and eveningwear. For spring/summer ’20, Phoenix Ba created elegant and timeless womenswear in creative designs. Created in variegated non-conventional materials and surface textile techniques, the line focuses on femininity, passion and confidence.
