Spring/summer '20 designs by Christopher John Rogers at NYFW

Every look created by emerging designer Christopher John Rogers that appeared on the runway received applause. His first-ever, spectacular runway show was a huge success, and the standing-room-only show sparked anticipation for this talented, young designer’s next collection. For his spring/summer ’20 NYFW presentation, he asked many of his friends to model along with the professional models. Several top designer friends were also in the audience to show support. Overall, the looks were charming, well tailored and whimsical yet glamorous!

Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the twenty-five year old Christopher John Rogers was encouraged to pursue a career in the arts at a young age. So he enrolled in fine arts classes, and the art exposure introduced him to design. His fashion career began while he was creating costumes for his comic book characters. Today, Rogers works out of Brooklyn. His SS ’20 collection featured voluminous shapes, detailed with plenty of ruffles, tulle and vibrant colors. Pretty prints and pattern pieces were in the show, too. One of his print gowns was accented with long matching gloves. Hair-dos were up!

Early in his creative development, he often used random fabrics or garbage bags and draped them on forms. He worked with a variety of materials to make his vision come to life. This experimentation was a huge part of the process in developing his look. Many Sunday mornings, while sitting in the pews of a Baptist church, he was in awe of the attention to detail that went into the details of the silk and wool ensembles worn by the congregants. So often, these outfits were completed with feathered hats, stockings and gloves. As he watched these fashionable churchwomen, who were always fabulously dressed, he was highly influenced while producing his fashion collections.

Some of his celebrity clientele includes former first lady Michelle Obama, Gabriella Union, Tessa Thompson and Lizzo. Cardi B showed off his Eddie Fox, mink and ostrich intarsia fur coat to the BET HIP Hop Awards.

The Christopher John Rogers brand is absolutely recognized in the fashion industry. The company’s goal is to create emotional and sensitive clothing with a focus on occasion dressing. Their looks are directed toward a client with a strong sense of self. While encouraging their customer to take up space, the brand delivers clothes with an emphasis on American manufacturing and timeless appeal.
