Yet another phase of getting Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns was recently disclosed, this one a subpoena issued by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.

Much like the request several months ago made by Democrats in Congress, state prosecutors are demanding that Mazars USA turn over eight years of Trump’s tax returns.

This latest request appears to be centered on Trump’s payment of hush money doled out to Stormy Daniels, the porn star, by Michael Cohen, then Trump’s attorney who was subsequently reimbursed by his boss. He is currently serving a three-year sentence for violating federal campaign finance laws.

Of special concern for the prosecutors is whether the company falsely claimed the reimbursement as a legal expense. If so, filing a false business statement is a crime.

While the full extent of the subpoena was not revealed, it could reach beyond the hush money and touch on other campaign violations during the presidential run in 2016. There were no comments from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance or from the attorneys representing Trump, who have consistently refused the demands, whether federal or state tax returns.

It was reported back in the spring that congressional procedure as well as pressure from Tish James, the New York attorney general, would effectively force Trump to submit his state returns, which if done, could possibly disclose the content of his federal returns.

All of this comes at a time when the hue and cry for Trump’s impeachment is again being echoed among Democrats. Some of the renewed effort stems from a document forged in the 1970s that was instrumental in forcing President Nixon’s resignation. One of the co-authors of the 64-page document on the history of impeachments was Hillary Clinton. Ironically, her research played a role in her husband’s impeachment predicament.

None of this is breaking news, but taken together it shows once more how the Trump administration continues to be rocked on its heels.
