Talking SCHOP! Get OUT! Part III

Our collective self-isolation has not been easy for most people. It feels like a Groundhog’s Day rife with anxiety, frustration, sadness and anger. We have all been there. We must make a conscious choice each day to calm that inner voice and seek those moments reminding us of simple joy.
I hope you have enjoyed this “Get OUT!” series about my weekend in Pennsylvania eating, swimming and generally regaining my sanity during these…ya know. However, right before this magical weekend, my bro Jason and I hopped in the car to run an errand downtown which inevitably leads us to food and consuming it with glee.
Our first stop would be a proper English fish and chips pop-up spot Jason discovered online that seems to be the bee’s knees. It is called Dame Summer Club (@Dame_NYC, 85 Macdougal Street, damenewyork.com), housed in Abigail’s Kitchen while they are closed during the pandemic.
I sat in the car while Jason assessed and ordered. He returned with some awesome selections and great info about the pop-up; most importantly, all profits go to charity and some of their locally sourced produce comes from Harlem Grown. (Harlem keeps on makin’ it!)
Eating on the hood of my car, we began with a special of cold pickled mussels prepared with curry yogurt and cilantro sauces and house-made saltine crackers. I adored the presentation and the taste was too sublime. So many notes and textures and flavors coming at you at once. Really exceptional food.
Though Jason’s plan was to get the famous beer battered fish and chips, I am so glad he opted for the fried fish sammy on a buttery brioche bun with a full-bodied fresh tartar sauce and lettuce. The batter was light, airy and not too greasy, preserving the integrity of quality fish inside. This is worth-the-trip kinda food.
After, Jason wanted to check out a wall mural we ultimately found on the other side of town. However, on the journey we passed Morgenstern’s ice cream (@MorgensternsNY) with no line outside so “skuuurt,” park and inside we went.
I do not remember what Jason got because I was instantly obsessed with mine, cardamom lemon jam hand-mixed into vanilla ice cream. Outrageously good and would be worth the $6 for the cup, less the not-so-friendly server’s attitude.
All I am saying here is do not get stuck in your bubble. Make a plan with someone, get cute (if you don’t already stay cute), take a deep breath and get OUT!
