It is a rare occasion when we agree with the New York Post, but Monday’s editorial, a front page zinger that demanded Trump “Stop the insanity,” was spot on with us, and hopefully with a number of his supporters.

“We understand, Mr. President, that you’re angry that you lost,” the Post continued. “But to continue down this road is ruinous. We offer this as a newspaper that endorsed you. If you want to cement your influence, even set the stage for a future return, you must channel your fury into something more productive.”

Toward the close of the editorial, Trump was admonished that if he spent his final days in office threatening to burn it down, “that will be how you are remembered. Not as a revolutionary, but as the anarchist holding the match.”

The Post, and to some degree like the commentators at Fox News, has come to its senses. We wait now for the bulk of the GOP lawmakers to arrive at theirs.

Like Trump’s votes and recent demands, the Post’s critique comes much too late. Trump’s road to ruin has reached the final paving, and it’s going to take a herculean effort by the Biden-Harris administration to create a different path toward normalcy and decency.

It’s simply incredible that there are millions in the nation willing to stand by a man who stands in the way of their self-interest. His resistance to the stimulus bill is nothing more than a warmed-over ploy to gain the upper hand, to make him the hero coming to rescue the American public.

But he is not our knight in shining armor, he’s a misfit who should have been lanced long before he won the Oval Office and the pardons he’s tossing around now should not be extended to him.

Nothing has been more ruinous to our nation than Trump’s last year in office. Millions of Americans are jobless, homeless, hungry, and months from receiving the vaccinations needed to combat COVID-19. Sadly, Trump has been the ruinous road block for this remedy as he has been on so many other critical issues.

“Stop the insanity,” the Post bellowed, and we hope that augurs a change in its all-too-often reactionary ways.
