A very happy new year to all of you. I am sure the holidays were exactly what was needed, whether that is together-time or just you time. Either of these serve to prepare you for a new year, with perhaps even a new perspective on who you are and what is to come. I say lean in.

Apologies to you (and my brilliant editors) for taking a break from writing. Trust and believe it was not because I did not have anything for which to write. Instead, Christmas came early for me with an outstanding experience to be a culinary producer on a new television show called “Hot Ones the Game Show.”

Since first mentioning this work in my last Talking SCHOP! piece of 2019, the production has ended but I remain on a high from the work, yes, but also my coworkers, the people of Atlanta including college friends, and the city of Atlanta itself.

My colleagues and I stayed in Atlanta’s Midtown since it is blocks away from the studio. I was dubious since the neighborhood is going through a lot of development and construction and there was not a lot of foot traffic.

After ordering some not-so-good Chinese food and getting some NYC attitude from a local ramen shop, I decided I would just get some grocery shopping in for the home kitchen and live on craft services during the day. That was until my colleague Alexis told me about a new ramen shop that just opened a short walk away.

Post a long day in the studio kitchen doing what I do, I decided to take myself out to try out E Ramen (1110 West Peachtree Street, eramenatl.com) in 32-degree weather for what I hoped would be a hug to my soul. The modern, Zen-like loft space reminded me of a restaurant I might find in Brooklyn. White walls with wooden accents and furniture.

I sidled up to the bar and ordered take out (because your girl needed to pass out), gyoza and the award-winning E signature ramen. While I waited, drinking my complimentary glass of water, I noticed the wall of sakes in front of me. It was then that owner, Windy, greeted me and started chatting me up. Turns out she is one of a handful of master sake sommeliers in the country. With that, my coat came off and I was dining in.

Windy quickly plated my food from the take-out containers while I sipped on bright and refreshing sake of her choosing. She told me how E Ramen is the second venture for her family after their successful Eight sushi lounge.

Gyoza were delicious with that balanced dipping sauce but the award-winning signature ramen is absolutely deserved. Rich but not thick pork broth with pork belly, scallions, egg, flash fried string beans and my favorite bit, the ground pork chili oil.

That is ground pork rendered in chili oil which adds unique texture to ramen and umami heat to the bowl.

I ate at E Ramen three more times with friends while in Atlanta, more than any other place. They also have an award-winning lobster ramen with lobster miso broth that I could get every day too. I will return for The Dark Knight black garlic tonkatsu next time.

Windy and family, thank you for your outstanding hospitality, customer service and of course the food.
