Make America Great Again—Trump Must Go! #171
EDITORIAL | 5/14/2020, midnight
To hear Trump brag that “We have met the moment and we have prevailed,” as if preparing for a victory lap in the conquest of the novel coronavirus pandemic, is reminiscent of President Bush’s moment of “Mission accomplished” during the Iraq war in 2003.
Bush didn’t exactly make that comment but it was festooned on the battleship during his speech and only later did he regret that background.
Also, Trump’s comment that we have met the moment and we have prevailed, reminds us of cartoonist Walt Kelly’s Pogo who said—“We have met the enemy, and it’s us.”
Americans have met the enemy and he resides in the Oval Office, and he is in the process of pulling out all stops, invoking every invidious tactic possible to hold on to that vaunted position.
The polls, at least at the moment, are indicating that he is more an enemy than an ally in fighting the spread of the pandemic. His task force, which he can’t seem to make up his mind about, has been a platform for him to spew a welter of opinions, and it’s good to hear that it will be scaled down.
His opposition to scientific advice has been absolutely horrendous, if not completely lethal. And we are certainly going to hear more of it after Dr. Fauci testifies before a senate subcommittee on Tuesday.
A majority of Americans, including television host Joe Scarborough, who is the most recent commentator to be hit by Trump’s scabrous insults and conspiracy theories, agree that Trump has not handled the virus or the nation’s vital resources with any sense of expertise or decency.
That strikes us as nothing new. Since he took the reins of the government his course of direction has been misguided and uninformed. He has proven to be an incompetent incumbent no matter what the issue is, from climate change to the current devastating crisis.
Hear our cry once more that to Make America Great Again—Trump Must Go!
