To honor the United States’ first Black president, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. has announced a new exhibit to come when it opens in 2015, the Associated Press reported.
Since President Barack Obama’s win in 2008, curators have been collecting objects, documents and images that paint a picture of his career. More than 300 artifacts have been collected already, including furniture from one of his campaign offices in Virginia in 2008. Curators are still gathering materials and may be looking into obtaining documents from Obama’s recent Inauguration. They’ve even accepted Obama memorabilia from his campaign, like magnets and life-size cutouts, provided by supporters.
Obama’s exhibit will be the tail end of a floor showcasing African-American history in the U.S. The history will include slavery, the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.
