Cable network HBO has announced the release of the second volume of the “Catch The Throne” mixtape, showcasing a number of hip-hop songs from some of the industry’s top lyricists. Big Boi of Outkast, Common, Snoop Lion and Talib Kweli are among the artists who contributed songs to the collection, produced to promote the new season of HBO’s fantasy thriller series, “Game of Thrones.”
Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” all of the songs on the mixtape explore the show’s themes, allowing the compilation’s stars to step out of the box of their normal lyrical perimeters and show their creativity by writing and rapping about dragons, magic and sword battles.
HBO took a step in an interesting direction to reach out to the African-American community by recruiting respected lyricists to promote the highly imaginative, story-driven television series. “I am a big fan of the books and the series,” said Talib Kweli. “As an MC, I’m not adverse to the concept of battles and the ability to tell compelling stories, and the ‘Game of Thrones’ series does just that. It is the reason I wanted to be a part of this mixtape.”
The first “Catch the Throne” mixtape was listened to more than 2.5 million times. This new mixtape promises to attract similar numbers. “Catch the Throne: The Mixtape Vol. 2” will be released March 17 via SoundCloud, free of charge.
