Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy has been cast to play the father of the prolific late comedian Richard Pryor. Murphy has been cast among an all-star lineup of actors, including Mike Epps as Pryor, Kate Hudson as Pryor’s wife, Jennifer Pryor, and Oprah Winfrey as his grandmother, Marie Carter.

Entertainment and tech website reports, “Murphy is known for citing Pryor as a major comedic influence (having also impersonated the veteran comedian in his early years), and went on to star alongside Pryor in 1989’s ‘Harlem Nights.’ Murphy almost starred in another biopic about Pryor (to be directed by Bill Condon), until the project was eventually shelved. Daniels’ untitled Richard Pryor biopic hasn’t been given a release date yet.”

According to rumors, the 53-year-old actor performed stand-up for the first time in 25 years at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles Thursday, March 19. Arsenio Hall tweeted about the event at 10 p.m. that evening.

Last month, Murphy sidestepped a potentially huge entertainment scandal by declining to impersonate Bill Cosby for the 40th anniversary “Saturday Night Live” special, which aired Feb. 15. The sketch included a joke that gave a nod to Cosby’s highly publicized rape allegations. Murphy, who has already publicly expressed disdain for the show’s past jokes about his own career, decided not to participate in the sketch.
