Zoë Kravitz, daughter of rock musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, is slated to star in a “High Fidelity” television reboot of the 2000 film that starred John Cusack, Catherine Zeta Jones and Lisa Bonet.
Variety reported, “The series, which has received a 10-episode order, is inspired by Nick Hornby’s novel and the Touchstone film of the same name. It reimagines the story from the female perspective. Kravitz, who will executive produce in addition to starring, will play the ultimate music fan—a record store owner who’s obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists.”
The cult classic book and film was a highlight for Kravitz’s mother, who played the main character Rob’s love interest, Marie De Salle. The fact that Kravitz is executive producing and acting in the Disney streaming series exhibits a generational nod to the legacy of her accomplished mother, and putting creative control in the hands of women of color within corporate and mainstream media.
Variety goes on to report, “The ‘High Fidelity’ series is created for streaming by writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka. West and Kucserka executive produce alongside Midnight Radio’s Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. ABC Signature Studios
will produce.
“The Disney direct-to-consumer streaming service is scheduled to launch in late 2019 and will feature a wide array of branded original and library content from The Walt Disney Studios, Disney-ABC Television Group, Pixar Animation, Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm.”
Although it will take some time for the Disney streaming service to launch, this reboot has already created buzz in the media and music worlds. This project will cross generational lines. The original book, “High Fidelity,” was published in 1995. Those old enough and nostalgic for a take on the book and the 2000 screenplay can be captured as a solid audience for the series, along with new millennial watchers who are fans of Zoë Kravitz, who, born in 1988, is a millennial herself.
