The Blacklight accepts funding from foundations and individual donors. Currently we receive funding from Report for America and donations which underwrite, in part, the salary of Shannon Chaffers, our Report for America corps member dedicated to covering gun violence.
Past funding we have received from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to supports our COVID-19 investigations, fact checks and underwrites the salary of our Science Reporter Helina Selemon and the salary of our Investigative Editor Damaso Reyes.Â
Past funding has also come from The Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights, Solutions Journalism Network, and the Google News Initiative.
We never allow our funders or donors to review our work before publication unless we they are a partner journalistic organization and even then we maintain and reserve the right to publish as we see fit. We are committed to maintaining editorial independence from our funders and donors.
