Celebrating Peace Week in NYC
On Dr. King’s actual birthday, New York City elected officials kicked off Peace Week with anti-violence leaders at City Hall. Erica Ford, co-founder of Peace Week and founder and CEO of LIFE Camp Inc., and A.T. Mitchell, co-founder of Peace Week and founder and CEO of Man Up! Inc., hosted a week of events from Tuesday, Jan. 15. Community events discussing anti-violence work and some of the inner city successes included “Talking Peace in Our Communities” hosted by Man Up! Inc., Brownsville Think Tank Matters and B.R.E.A.T.H.E. Circles at the Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center, 876 Schenck Ave., Brooklyn and G-MACC ribbon cutting at their second Cure Violence, Crisis Management office in Fort Greene, with the Violence Interrupters who mediate conflicts and de-escalate gun violence in Fort Greene and Farragut.
Monday, Jan. 21, the Coney Island Anti-Violence Collaborative held the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Peace Walk. That afternoon the National Action Network hosted their Martin Luther King Day 2019 town hall with “A Conversation on Healing Our Communities from the Disease of Violence and the Disparity of Mass Incarceration,” with doctor and integrative wellness expert Deepak Chopra, founder and CEO of LIFE Camp and Co-Creator of the NYC Crisis Management System Erica Ford and award-winning actor Julianne Moore.
