Last I shared about NYC Winter Restaurant Week (ending February 12), I focused on the 12 participating restaurants in our village of Harlem (mostly Black-owned). Now, at the beginning of the 50th celebration of Black History Month (thank you Dr. Carter G. Woodson for your vision), allow me to follow up with some Black-owned restaurants outside of our village for you to explore, if you haven’t done so already.

Now, the NYC Winter Restaurant Week website is set up for diners to explore restaurants by cuisine, borough, neighborhood, and meal types, amongst other search functions. None can be searched by the owner, so I used ‘cuisine’ and my own knowledge, experience, and editorial know-how to create this list.

Sweet Catch (1222 Nostrand Avenue, BK) – serving Dinner and Sunday Lunch/BRUNCH/Dinner, you will find your seafood dreams come to life. Course 1 is either New England clam chowder, salad, or smoked salmon deviled eggs. The main course is either fish, seafood pasta, or fried chicken and shrimp on a cornbread waffle. Just yes ma’am!

Flava of the Bronx (3114 Third Avenue, BX) – serving Dinner and Sunday Dinner, $45, you will find a full Jamaican experience with codfish cakes, jerk wings, or soup as appetizers; Jerk salmon, braised oxtail, or Rasta pasta as the main choices. End with some boozy dessert choices. Irie!

Hav & Mar (245 11th Avenue, M) – serving Dinner and Sunday Dinner. Owned by Marcus Samuelsson and expertly helmed by the phenomenal James Beard Award-nominated chef Fariyal Abdullahi, they are presenting a fabulous Restaurant Week menu replete with my entree “bae,” the updated Havatini of campanelle pasta with shrimp, crab, and uni butter. And I will start with the fluke ceviche with yuzu, carrot, and cilantro!

Jasmine’s Caribbean Cuisine (371 West 46th Street, M) – serving Lunch, Dinner, Sunday Lunch/Brunch/Dinner. If you find yourself in the Theater District for a show, this might be the spot to treat yourself. Yes, their Restaurant Week menu will give you what it is supposed to but I am captivated by their Flight Experience of five appetizers (vegetarian option available) and three mini cocktails for $45. Boarding call for Kysha Harris. THERE!

Patricks on the Hill (1635 Amsterdam Avenue) – serving Lunch and Dinner. The 13th participating Harlem (Hamilton Heights) restaurant is serving mini versions of their famous One Stop Patty Shop down-the-ave on 145th street as a starter. After oxtails or brown stewed chicken, I will be having black cake with ice cream. It is Black History Month after all.

Let this be your invitation from these Black-owned restaurants to explore what they are offering during Restaurant Week and beyond. And please let me know some of your favorite restaurants in your area, I should try and highlight here in AmNewsFOOD.

Thanks for reading and happy eating!
