It is no understatement to say that Trump is an autocrat on steroids.
Evidence of this appears with each passing day, and his recent halting of the Hudson Tunnel Project further demonstrates his determination to micromanage the nation’s infrastructure. Now, we learn that he plans to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Detroit and Windsor, Canada.
We have witnessed his boundless egomania with his demand that New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport be renamed for him in exchange for freeing up $16 billion for the tunnel. He has already instituted brutal ways of holding our cities hostage with the deployment of federal agents, and teetering on the brink is the possibility that his madness will strip job protections from 15,000 federal employees.
No matter where you turn in our seriously divided country, Trump’s massive and devastating footprint is at work. A bit of good news happened on Tuesday when Tom Malinowski conceded to Analilia Mejia in the Democratic primary to replace Gov. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey in the House.
Mejia was viewed as the most progressive of the candidates, insisting that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. If she succeeds in the April general election, she could become part of “The Squad,” aligning with Representatives Ayanna Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. To intercept the fascist moves of the Trump administration, we need more victories such as this to intensify the upcoming third “No Kings” nationwide protest on March 28. By then, we should have even more terrible examples of Trump’s insurgent pathology. Of course, we are happy to learn that many groups and organizations inspired by the strategies and tactics of the sixties are not waiting for that date in March. It’s time to put that autocrat on ice!
