Each spring and fall for nine consecutive weeks, Columbia, Barnard, New York University and Baruch College students serve as coaches to prepare under-served high school students for the SATs and college application process free-of-charge. And it is working!EVENT: Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem is one of several sites throughout Manhattan where the tutoring sessions take place from 6:00pm until 9:00pm on Mondays and Thursdays.High school participants are divided into ability based classes no larger than 5 students per coach, and are given SAT instruction from materials provided from Test Takers, a commercial SAT preparation company. The coaches also provide assistance with college selection, application essays and financial aid/scholarship opportunities. In fact, three of our students were named New York Times scholars this year.Let’s Get Ready is the most cost-effective and replicable SAT preparation program available to low-income and first-generation high school students today. For a fraction of the cost of commercial SAT preparation programs ($500 per student) participants increase their scores on average by 110 points. To date, 7500 high school students have been served by this organization. College students who serve as coaches benefit by the enrichment they feel as a direct result of their teaching experience.Lets Get Ready operates in partnership with 18 prestigious colleges and universities in the Northeast in the fall and spring and many communities between New Jersey and Massachusetts over the summer.WHEN: April 27thTime: 5:30pm-6:00pmWhere: Frederick Douglass Academy 2581 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (150th St.) New York, New York 10039(Follow driveway ramp and enter school through first door to the right)Event Contact: Brian Dever: 612-414-5321 (mobile)Program Contact: Lauri Novick, Executive Director Let’s Get Ready, 50 Broadway, Suite 806 New York, NY 10004 686-808-2766- phone www.letsgetready.org-website
