On Tuesday and Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration met to discuss over-the-counter dosage recommendations for Tylenol for children under 2 years of age. Currently, labeling instructions are listed only for children over 2, although the medicine is widely used to reduce fevers in children of all ages. Containers of Children’s Tylenol list instructions for children over 2 and tell parents to consult their physicians for children younger than 2.

Recommendations made by the FDA include adding dosage instructions for children under the age of 2 on packages of over-the-counter medicines containing acetaminophen. The recommendations also include requiring dosage instructions based on a child’s weight, according to the FDA Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and Pediatric Advisory Committee.
