KD dance founders Tricia Kaye and David Lee have been creating knits for dancers and stars of the dance and entertainment community since 1980. The two met in Oakland, Calif., at the Oakland Ballet Company, where Kaye was the ballet mistress and Lee was one of the company’s dancers.
They established a small operation out of their home in the Bay Area as a sideline to their dance careers and began selling their dancewear to students, fellow company members and visiting professionals. The partners moved to the South Bronx to establish a facility to manufacture their brand in 1987.
Kaye has studied design technology in Japan and is the company’s chief technical designer. Lee studied at the Washington Ballet in Washington, D.C. He also attended the American University for filmmaking.
As president of KD Dids, the company that produces the KD dance clothing line, Lee has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East. He focuses on marketing and sales.
Since its beginning, KD dance has grown significantly and established a reputation and niche for quality. Some of their clients include well-known dance brands like Capezio and Freed of London.
In their collections, KD dance’s signature style features are comfort, clean, modern styling and soft color palettes. Their stretchable pieces are highly desirable.
