With the holidays officially in our rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward. Behind us are our gluttonous moments of indulgence that have led to the extra pounds typical of holiday cheer. For those of us with an unwanted extra pound or two and the bad habits responsible for their presence, it’s time to take charge!

We need to reestablish our exercise routines and positive behavior. Believe me, I understand this can be easier said than done, but it only takes one day to get back on a good foot.

There are all sorts of excuses this time of year. “It’s too cold outside.” “I’ll go tomorrow.” “It’s too early.” At the end of the day, whatever reason you come up with, none are more important than a better you.

The 3Fs are all about putting your best foot forward, so go ahead. Even if that favorite outfit is a little snug, wear it anyway! Let it serve as a reminder of the bettering that needs to get done. This is just the type of subtle challenge that will help motivate you.

If you look good, you’ll feel good. This is the essence of fashion. We are often our own worst critics, so don’t be afraid of others noticing those couple of extra pounds-this is about you! Maintaining a positive self-image is extremely important. If you’re looking to lose weight, it could be as simple as replacing a sweet beverage with water. This may sound crazy, but if you usually drink a few cups of iced tea each day, those extra calories have to get burned by your metabolism. By cutting them out, your body can focus on burning the other calories in your diet.

Here’s a general rule: Eliminating 3,500 calories per week equals one pound of weight loss. If that same iced tea represents 500 calories a day, you could lose one pound just by eliminating it. Burn another 500 calories a day through exercise and you could lose two pounds a week. Follow this up with five modest-sized meals instead of three large ones and you’ll keep your metabolism working all day.
