Three years after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the recovery efforts and development of Haiti limps along much like the economic development in my beloved Harlem.
As the delegation, led by Dr. Ron Daniels and his wife, Mary Francis Daniels, made its way from the capital of Port-au-Prince to the province of Cape Haitian, I could not help but draw comparisons between the seemingly neglected and disorganized populations that bristle with so much promise. All around, the “everyday people” moved about, working or looking for work in order to live a little easier, and though the riggers of the day take their toll, you see smiles, hear hardy greetings and see prideful strides.
Nonetheless, the report is one of progress taking place at the OASIS Institute. Our delegation was greeted by a group of “thank young” girls, who are receiving support from the Shriner’s Hospital, the Freemasons and the Haiti Support Project.
