The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is showcasing an extraordinary range of design works created by this year’s 800 graduate students from the college’s School of Art and Design at its annual Art and Design Graduating Students Exhibition. Open May 9 to May 22, the exhibition is displayed on the main floors of the Marvin Feldman, Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design and Shirley Goodman Resource centers, in the John E. Reeves Great Hall and the Museum at FITY.
One particular highlight is “The Pink Issue: Barbie Play With Fashion.” It’s a fantastic, two-story installation inspired by Barbie and Ken dolls. Created by students in fashion design, interior design, jewelry design, photography and visual presentation and exhibition design, this exhibition showcases Barbie and Ken fashions made from nontraditional materials and displayed on life-size models.
You can also view models of new rooms for Barbie’s Dream House, full-sized replicas of furniture and photos and short films featuring Barbie and Ken. A storefront window was inspired by Barbie’s Dream House and “Play With Fashion.”
The exhibition features design work from 17 major departments in the school. The prized pieces represent the culmination of each graduate student’s unique FIT experience in accessories design, advertising design, communication design, computer animation and interactive media. Featuring juried, award-winning and thesis projects, this presentation is the manifestation of several years of research, experimentation, critical thinking and artistic proficiency.
