The Urban Golf Association of New York will host its ninth annual Golf Classic at Lido Beach, N.Y., on Friday, Aug. 31. The tournament will benefit and assist the organization in its youth programs that are ongoing throughout the year, weather depending.

The sport of golf is so overwhelmingly different from a sport like basketball. Golf is virtually impossible to learn on your own. Very seldom, if ever, does one see a youngster wander over to a golf course. Other than the municipal golf courses, there are no courses where a youngster can go and pick up a club and began to play.

A major difference is money. Money to get on a course. Money to hire someone to teach you how to play. And money to purchase equipment. Golf is indeed a sport of privilege.

The Urban Golf Association plays a key role by identifying young people, both male and female, who are attracted to the game and providing them with the resources to flourish in the golf world. The association should be applauded in its efforts to raise funds to find the next Tiger or even to raise money for scholarships that would assist a youngster attracted to the game.

So getting kids out to the courses is the first step. The tournament will tee off at 10:30 a.m., immediately after the 9:30 a.m. breakfast call. Your support will assist the organization in its mentoring and scholarship programs, enabling young folks in their pursuit of higher education.
