Inhale Hope- Exhale the Stigma- Creative Arts Series-1 Fashion Emerge and Mae’s Breath Foundation will host 1 year anniversary of newly formed Mae’s Breath Foundation in memory of Brooklyn resident Eartha Mae Lawson, who lost her brief battle with the lung cancer in 2010. The evening festivities that will include showcasing MBF’s on-line support group, as well as an introduction of creative arts series which will promote lung cancer awareness. This event will be held on Tuesday March 5, 2013 in New York City from 6:00-8:30pm, at Culture Fix- 9 Clinton Street (lower Manhattan) between Stanton and Houston Street. We’re excited about the event with regards to providing another form of communal support for those battling lung cancer. Fashion Emerge and Mae’s Breath will present the first of many efforts to effectively bring awareness to lung cancer by using the arts. The stigma of lung cancer has a stifling and evident repercussion when it involves treatment, diagnoses, and lack of awareness to the illness. The organizations motto “To Breathe Should not be Discriminatory” is fitting as smokers and a rising number of non-smokers (11.9% up from 7% in 2000) are being forgotten without newer methods in diagnosing, treatment, and lack of funding for this particular cancer. The event will highlight the latest developments in lung cancer treatment with Dr. Bryan Schneider who is the Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/ Oncology at New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center. New York renowned Soul Singer Rhonda Denet will perform a medley of songs. The night will conclude with a T-shirt fashion competition with designers Sara Crawford, Janice Laila Smith, and Celeste Lindsey showcasing their T- shirt design representing lung cancer awareness.
