A little over a week ago, Sergeant Ron King of Port Canaveral, Florida was fired for bringing shooting targets that resembled Trayvon Martin, a teenager who was shot by neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman a year ago, to a gun range.
In response, on Saturday, April 13th, Sergeant Ron King posted a video on YouTube. The description states it as a “response to false accusations.” In the video King said “I find that people are accusing me of doing something that I just plain did not do.” King went on to explain that he brought the targets to demonstrate what officers should not shoot at, and claimed that anyone who is saying otherwise is trying to further their own political agenda.
Port Canaveral Interim Chief Executive Officer John Walsh told WFTVthat King asked the group if they wanted to use the targets and they said no, telling King to put them back into his patrol car. Walsh also told WFTV that “whether his [King’s] act was hatred or stupidity, none is tolerable.”
This incident took place a little over 50 miles away from Sanford, where Martin was killed by neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman, in 2012. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self defense. His trial is scheduled for June.
