The annual Susan G. Komen “Run Breast Cancer Out of Town” walk takes place this Sunday in Central Park at 9 a.m. on Sept. 8.
It will be the Amsterdam News team’s sixth year of participation, and this reporter’s sixth year of remission. There is nothing but gratitude.
Someone asked this reporter why I even bother with the race. I’m not sure where the question came from mentally, but the response is so many Black women have been and are diagnosed with this devastating condition, and it is so under-reported in our community that this reporter wanted to document both her personal struggle and inspire through action and participation that we can fight, survive and thrive. So we walk or run with other breast cancer survivors, friends, family and perfect strangers. In support. In love. In solidarity.
The Komen organization, according to their website, has invested more than $2.2 billion to advance medical treatment for cancer. The Komen races are organized by local Komen members and the money the race accumulates will then be put into local resources for finding a cure.
