“If you’re 25, 35 or over—stand up!” said Hot 97 DJ Mister Cee. He kept the crowd of thousands hyped and rocking to old-school hip-hop Monday night at the crazy 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. concert series at Wingate Park in Brooklyn.
The event is always a good night of grown-folk fun, where the young’uns fall back and let their parents, older siblings, aunts and uncles school ‘em on some of the original joints that paved the way for what should be more inspirational, uplifting fair.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams hosted as Grandmaster Caz and the Kangol Kid added to the rousing performances of Kool Moe Dee and Roxanne Shante. Folks went back—waaay back—as Cee dug in the crates and Rob Base and Biz Markie got into their sets. Meanwhile, the sing-along, know-every-lyric audience reminisced on the warm August evening.
Did I say Kool Moe Dee just killed it?! Man, he was on point!
Switching up styles, reggae artist Gyptian will grace the stage next Monday with Maxi Priest. On the final night of the series, Aug. 18, gospel performer Tamela Mann and the choir from the Christian Cultural Center in East New York will perform.
