Concerned with the pandemic rise of gun violence among black urban youths and their associated communities, New York City Council Member Jumaane Williams is teaming up with Detroit Council Member Mary Sheffield, to kick-off “Occupy the Corners Detroit,” a task force devised to educate surrounding communities on effective ways to stem the wanton rise of senseless gun violence.
Officials state that the event “will bring resources to the event, including information regarding employment, training, expungement, utility assistance, voter registration and upcoming community events.” and will take place in front of The King Homes in Detroit.
This is not Council Member Williams’ first time standing on the front lines of the gun violence battle. In 2011, he helped to launch Occupy the Corners in New York City, with the same mission of decreasing the number of city-wide deaths associated with gun violence.
