Eladia Riggs Bing passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 following a lengthy battle with Stage 4 cancer. She was 73.
Bing was born in Panama and moved to this country when she was 8 years old with her parents Eric and Winifred Riggs.
She had a long career at the National Urban League. Bing joined the organization in 1973 in the Research Department. She later transferred to the Development Department whereshe remained until 1995. For her exemplary service and leadership, in 1990 she received the League’s highest staff award – The Ann Tanneyhill Award. She served as a liaison to the Urban Leadership Forum for young professionals. She directed the League’s Gallery 62, an art gallery dedicated to showing and promoting the work of African American artist such as Romare Bearden, Gordon Parks, Jonathan Green, and Elizabeth Catlett. From 1995 until her passing, she worked as an independent consultant with the National Urban League’s Marketing & Communication/Event Marketing and Development Departments.
Prior to the National Urban League, she was a research assistant at the Riverside Research Institute, a Librarian Assistant at Trans World Airlines, and a Library Assistant in the Economics Division at the New York Public Library.
She was an active member and past President of the National Urban League Guild. Bing was also a past Treasurer of Opus 118 Music Center and on the Board of Women in Development.
She was a graduate of The City College of New York.
Bing is survived by her beloved daughter Tracey Nicole Bing, brother Enrique Riggs (Carol), niece Myra Riggs-Ceusters, goddaughter Michelle Houck and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends.
The Memorial Service will be on November 22 at 11am at Christ Church Riverdale, 5030 Henry Hudson Parkway East, Bronx, NY 10471. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to the American Cancer Society.
