Sarah Boyd, in blue dress, pictured with loved ones. (104372)

In 1945, Sarah Boyd and her husband moved to Harlem, N.Y., and became lifelong residents of this city. Boyd was raised in the Baptist Church and was a member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church until 2011, when she no longer had the strength to get around.

She has lived through the Great Depression and saw the first Black baseball player, Jackie Robinson, get in the Major Leagues. She lived through the introduction of TV, the Civil Rights Movement (When she went back to visit

Columbia, S.C., she couldn’t believe Woolworth’s seated Black and whites together!) and the women’s movement, and she watched man walk on the moon on TV.

Boyd was born during the administration of William H. Taft, the 27th president of the United States, and has lived to see President Barak H. Obama, the 44th president, elected to office. She has a loving family consisting of her daughter, Annie; a deceased son-in-law; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and twin great-great-granddaughters.
