A Jacksonville, Fla. sheriff fired a shot at an unarmed Black man last Monday (Nov. 24) as the man rushed his asthmatic daughter home to get medication.
According to the police report, officer J.C. Garcia pursued Dennison’s green Ford, with his sirens on, after spotting it zooming through a parking lot, running a stop sign, nearly hitting another car, and heading in the wrong direction down a one-way street. Garcia shot at Dennison after the unarmed 29-year-old father reached his apartment complex. His daughter, who was having an asthma attack, was in the car.
“I seen (sic) a light, but at that moment in time I’m not paying attention to him,” Dennison said, according to a local news report. “I’m paying attention to my child.”
The mother of the young girl, Nacoya Ransom, said Dennison put his hands out the window to show he was unarmed, but the cop shot anyway.
The five-year police veteran fired at Dennison, believing he was armed, but missed. Garcia then realized Denison was unarmed. Dennison explained that he was rushing home to get his six-year-old daughter her medication for an asthma attack.
Ransom added that her daughter was shaken by the incident. “She just thought that they were going to shoot her, and she was afraid for her dad,” Ransom explained to the media.
Dekierian Cook, Dennison’s cousin, overheard the shooting. “I think he just shot to shoot, you know,” Cook told the media. “There’s really no reason [to shoot].” He added that Dennison’s daughter has “really bad allergies.”
Dennison was arrested on misdemeanor charges of knowingly driving with a suspended license. He is being held on a nearly $2,000 bond at the Duval County Jail.
“On 11-24-14, a JSO Patrol Officer conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle at 3900 Toledo Road. During the traffic stop the officer fired his handgun one time. No one was injured. The Cold Case Unit will follow up the investigation,” the arrest report states.
A separate investigation was opened to address the shot fired, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Melissa Bujeda. The shooting was the first for Garcia, who has not been placed on leave.
“Being placed on leave is not automatic for every situation,” Bujeda told the media. “It is up to staff to determine what will be done. Each investigation is unique and investigated as such.”
