Baby, it’s cold outside! Taking care of your skin is a must, and winter is the best season for at-home skincare. Dr. Janet Prystowsky, MD, Ph.D., a board certified dermatologist located in Manhattan, has shared some important winter skincare tips.
When bathing, opt for warm water instead of hot. In fact, turn your bathroom into your spa. Use a minimal amount of soap. For moisturizing and cleansing your skin, use a heavier moisturizer and more oily products. Apply a gentler cleanser than you do in summer.
To avoid frostbite, protect your face, ears, head, fingers and toes. And stay dry. On your hands and feet, use Vaseline or Aquaphor daily. On your body, wear warm outerwear, gloves, mittens, thick socks, tights, leggings, longer skirts or dresses, hats and scarves. Even long underwear is fashionable this season. They come in all colors, textures and styles. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from glares, and keep your eyes warm as well. Be sure to drink lots of water.
You can still get a sunburn in the winter. Sunscreen is essential. When you are outside, especially for extended periods of time (such as skiing, snowboarding, jogging or walking), use sunscreen that contains a SPF of 30 or higher. For high altitudes, a sunscreen with SPF 50 is best, especially when the sun or snow is bright. Do not lick your lips when they get dry. Here again, use Vaseline and Aquaphor.
When it comes to water and the humidifier, keep in mind that winter air dries your skin. At home, it’s best to use a humidifier. Protect your skin and yourself from the elements of winter.
