Every two years, the New York Education Council holds elections for council members. Since this is the year of elections, the Education Council is taking great measures to round up as many candidates from each of the 32 districts.
According to the Education Council, “Parents have a powerful voice in shaping the policies and priorities of New York City schools.” The Education Council is made up of all 32 districts and four citywide Education Councils. These four include the Citywide Council on High Schools, the Citywide Council on Special Education, the Citywide Council on English Language Learners and the Citywide Council for District 75. To run for any of these 36 councils, you must either live in the district or have a child in one of the specialized areas.
Jesse Mojica, director of education policy at the office of the Bronx borough president, stated, “CEC plays a critical part in our education system,” adding that council members “work hand in hand with the community.”
If interested, you must apply to an Education Council between Feb. 11 and March 11. After the application process, candidate forums will take place March 18 to April 18. The final step of the process includes selector voting from April 19 to May 8.
Each New York City borough president will host information sessions about the positions. For more information and a complete listing of times and locations of the information sessions, visit http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/CEC/GPInformation/default.htm.
