Breast cancer tends to appear in Black women at a younger age and in more advanced forms. In fact, Black women are two times more likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease that has fewer effective treatment options. Early detection is critically important. The following community events are open to the public:
Zumba in Pink Master Class
Thursday, Oct. 22, Council Member Jumaane D. Williams is proud to co-sponsor a free Zumba in Pink Master Class as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish Auditorium, 1281 Troy Ave. (between Avenue D and Foster Avenue), in partnership with Fitness for Flatbush, Emblem Health and the Haitian-American Community Coalition. F3 and Fitness for Brooklyn (FitBK) have provided free weekly, results-driven aerobics and core strength-training sessions led by certified fitness instructors throughout the area. Making Strides to Survive Health Fair
Saturday, Oct. 24, Council Member Williams, state Sen. Kevin Parker and Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte will be hosting the Making Strides to Survive HealthFair with the Haitian-American Centers Council, from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m. at the Flatbush YMCA, located at 1410 Flatbush Ave. The fair will offer free breast cancer screening, flu shots, HIV testing and more.
