Percy Miller is a single father who is raising five beautiful children: his daughter, Cymphonique, and four sons, Romeo, Veno, Hercy and Mercy.
Lord have mercy! You need big bucks to raise kids these days, but that works out perfectly well for Miller because he’s earned his wealth, that is, built his empire, as Master P.
Master P has never been shy about how he makes money. To quote from the song “Richtown” (from his 1991 album, “Verse 1”): “Well it’s Saturday, but yo it don’t matter. It’s money to be made. Master P got away cleaner than Cascade.”
Now, he’s giving a sneak peek into the five reasons why and how he’s growing his empire. We connected last month almost by accident—right time, right place—all that jazz. This interview would be our first time chatting. Master P was in town for a few hours, and he made a point of connecting with the Amsterdam News. He wanted to talk about his new reality series, “Master P’s Family Empire,” premiering Nov. 28 on REELZ.
The day of our interview was rainy and cold. That combination always makes New York subways late and car traffic ugly and challenging. The appointment was set for 11 a.m., but caught under the maze of late trains, I connected with the publicist to alert her of the situation. I am “old-school,” which means—essentially—to arrive on time is to arrive late. I arrived at 11 a.m.
Hustling through the door, with an attractive woman and a “cute as he wanna be” homie, was Master P. I watched from a distance, my back pressed against the wall.
Mind you, Master P and I never met. He didn’t know I was the reporter. I was just a disheveled woman in a New York City lobby, but he smiled and said hello. It was a warm and friendly greeting—old school and charming. He and his crew caught the elevator and I caught the next one.
When I walked in, Master P smiled and nodded his head.
After reviewing the pilot, I knew that I wanted to focus the questions around raising kids who have never known “financial lack” a day in their lives. Master P worked hard and made a better life for his family.
“Master P’s Family Empire” will be the first time that Master P opens the doors to his family home, offering viewers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into how he skillfully juggles his roles as businessman and father, along with managing the singing, modeling, acting and sports careers of his kids.
AmNews: What inspired you to create this show?
Master P: I am a single dad raising kids. I want to show people what hip-hop is right now. When we think about hip-hip we find all these negative things … No one showcases the [positive] things that a lot of artists are doing and the sacrifices that they make for their kids.
They [work to] make a better life for their families. I feel this show will be spotlighting what we do, when we are not working.
A look at how a hip-hop, how we can change a community and [how] we are able to give back and do things that normal people couldn’t do.
In me, building my empire it’s gotta work for my kids for this to be successful. We have to build a generation of wealth. I have to make the people around me strong with financial literacy.
Excellent lead in. Your son (Veno) racked up 11 grand on your credit card—“Say what now?”
(laughing) Episode 1,“I’m Your Father, Not Your Friend,” is all about that. I made him work it off as my personal assistant.
In teaching your kids—I keep it simple. I stress education … My education meant so much. It saved my life. Financial education is essential, to learn how to build wealth, that’s essential.
Back-to-back episodes, “I’m Your Father, Not Your Friend” and “Set Goals and Make It Happen,” will air Nov. 28 at 8:30 p.m. ET/ 5:30 p.m. PT.
