Contributing cultural fashions to New York Fashion Week, African elegance arrived at the Plaza Hotel. Kapy Bash Mode debuted a collective showcase to an audience of style enthusiasts, fashion influencers and media makers. Founded in France in 1992, Kapy Bash Mode offers African ethnic gowns inspired by cultures from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The designer utilized Ankara, French lace, satin and linen fabrics. For men, they plan to debut a resort line of swimwear fashions and Ankara boxer shorts.
Creator Kapinga Bashala has been designing for the Kapy Bash Mode brand for 26 years. She has designed custom gowns for TV personalities, government dignitaries, pageants and bridal parties. “There are many negative misconceptions about African cultures and lifestyles,” explained Bashala. “Contemporary African fashions are demystifying the negative stereotypes. With each ethnic gown I create, I share an experience of Congolese’s cultural decadence with the world.”
With a mission to assist women and children in rural communities of the DR Congo, every purchase made allows KBM to provide medical care, food and clean drinking water to the population at risk in DR Congo. Kapinga also educates Congolese women and helps them develop fundamental skills for starting a small business. Sharing culture through fashion helps to preserve heritage through collective economics. It is a sustainable trend that’s always in style.
