“We lost a master Pan-Afrikanist and Black power general when Abubadika Sony Carson made his transition,” said activist Caleef Cousar. “But luckily he left us with a detailed blueprint, including his book, ‘The Education of Sonny Carson,’ and his film of the same name, plus all his work in these streets with his School of Hard Knocks and Committee to Honor Black Heroes, for us to follow the rules of Black power self-empowerment and self-determination.”

This Sunday, the Committee to Honor Black Heroes, along with Drum Love, will be hosting a tribute to the long-time community leader who died 13 years ago on Dec. 20, 2002. Family, friends and supporters will gather at the plaza on Utica Street and Fulton Street, Bed-Stuy (near the A and C train stop at Utica) at 3 p.m.

Co-organizer Kwaku Payton is calling drummers from all over to assemble and honor this urban legend who made young people, education and the rebuilding of the Black community his mission. For more information, call 443 760 6776.
