The New York Jets are playing with a somewhat amended but shared theme to close out the fourth quarter of this 2015-16 NFL season. It’s to start fast, play smart and close out and complete games in a winning manner.
“We proved last week that we could finish strong,” said rookie defensive lineman Leonard Williams, referencing the Jets’ overtime rivalry victory over the New York Giants. “Now we wanna prove that we can start fast.”
“We jumped on them pretty quick,” stated cornerback Darrelle Revis, who saw action in his first game back after missing the last two because of a concussion. Impressed and highly complimentary of his team’s performance Sunday against the struggling, rebuilding Tennessee Titans, Revis further noted, “Today was for us to come out there and get a fast start. That’s what we talked about all week and pre-game. Let’s get a fast start. We talked about last night in the meeting. Get a fast start. You can see we jumped on them pretty quick. By half time, it was 27-0, and that’s how we wanted to play this game.”
“We wanted to start fast,” said their quarterback from Harvard, Ryan Fitzpatrick. “To be able to put up points like we got at the the end of the half. Those were important. That was kind of like the theme going into the game.”
The Jets, now 8-5 and on a three-game win streak, are now preparing for Saturday’s road game against the Dallas Cowboys, who’ve struggled this season because of an injury to their starting quarterback, Tony Romo.
The Jets had struggled somewhat themselves, lacking the ability to build early, dominant leads in any of the past 12 games they played before last Sunday’s game against Dallas.
“We had yet to start fast this year and jump out to a lead, and play from ahead,” said a reflective but proud Todd Bowles, the Jets’ head coach. He complimented, his team’s performance and further stated, “They did a good job. You know, we ran the ball and threw the ball well. They executed.”
A smiling Revis added, “We came out fresh, and were ready to go.”
To make it to the postseason, the Jets will need to live up to all of these self-uttered compliments and be ready to go in the coming weeks, as the regular season is winding down and nearing it’s conclusion. Playoffs? Here come the Jets, flying to playoff land.
