Reports indicate that an NYPD sergeant involved in the death of Eric Garner has been placed on modified duty.
Sgt. Kizzy Adonis of the 120th Precinct has been stripped of her badge and gun for her role in Garner’s 2014 death where officers placed him in an apparent chokehold in Staten Island.
An internal investigation reveled that Adonis was charged with failure to supervise along with other charges.
In a statement, Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said his union plans to fight the disciplinary action.
“[Police Commissioner] Bratton’s decision to charge was politically motivated,” he said. “We will strenuously defend against the charges.”
Adonis’ discipline is the first in the Garner case for any of the officers involved. A Staten Island grand jury failed to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Panteleo, the officer who put Garner in the chokehold. The U.S Department of Justice is still investigating on whether or not to bring civil rights charges against the officer.
