Powerhouse of the labor movement Jim Haughton was memorialized at Harlem’s Mount Olivet Baptist Church, with friends and family praising his unwavering dedication.

The Brooklyn-born veteran of the Korean war died April17, 2016. He was the founder of Fight Back, once known as the Harlem Unemployment Center. It was a community-based organization set up in 1964 to fight racial discrimination in the construction industry and trade unions. The “James Haughton Papers” collection at the New York Public Library lays out much of the work of this Hunter College adjunct professor of Puerto Rican Studies. The man who fought for the right of the everyday people is well remembered.
