On my first visit to Seattle, I was so looking forward to having sushi in the Pacific Northwest. How could any part of sushi be wrong in the Pacific Northwest? It could be and it was. My friend Raquel and I didn’t even clean our plates, and we always clear our sushi plates. We had to salvage the evening with hot pecan pie and vanilla ice cream down the street.
On this second visit to Seattle, we would be on the hunt for the sushi unicorn. This time, I would go with a little recon from a friend. While on a short business trip to Seattle, he and his colleagues ate at this location three times in four days. It was a sign! This location would be the place.
So on our only adult girls’ night out, Raquel and I and our New York City expat friend Leah hit up Umi Sake House (@Umi_Sake_House, 2230 1st Ave., www.umisakehouse.com) to put it to the test. Spoiler alert: Amazing!
We ordered a couple of appetizers to start. Prawns wrapped with egg noodles and then fried and served with sweet chili lime sauce came first and could not be devoured fast enough. I might try that one at home.
We had to wait patiently for handmade, delicate-skinned, pan-fried seafood gyoza of shrimp and scallop served with chili oil ponzu. No matter, because it is a sake house, we imbibed on the most perfect bottle of sake, Kikisui Junmai Ginjo. Not too dry or sweet, with notes of citrus and persimmon. Gorgeous!
The meal was going so well we ordered omakase (chef’s selection) to take us over the edge. You must see it and the rolls and the dessert, too. It’s all on the blog at www.talkingSCHOP.wordpress.com.
