A coalition of community members and criminal justice reform advocates are asking the Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark to drop assault charges against Mamadou Diallo, a taxi driver who was responsible for the death of a man who tried to rape his wife in a Bronx apartment building.
In May, Earl Nash broke into Diallo’s home in Morrisania, where his wife, Nenegale, was present. Nash tried to remove Nenegale Diallo’s clothing and struck her on the forehead, leaving several bruises.
After Nenegale offered Nash money to leave her home, where her sister also was present, Nash told her, “I don’t want money. I am going to rape you.”
Nash tried to attack the other woman as well, giving Nenegale Diallo the chance to escape. She yelled for help before Nash struck her again.
Mamadou Diallo was outside of the apartment building when his wife broke free and called him. He went into the building, found Nash and beat him with a tire iron. Nash was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he died.
Diallo was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. As a result, his employer suspended his driving privileges, and his family is now surviving on support from friends and the community.
The rally is set to take place Saturday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m., at 1420 Washington Ave. in the Bronx.
