It was a memorable moment to hear that Cabell “Cab” Calloway’s Riverdale home is being offered for sale on Riverdale Avenue. Walking through the home was quite a trip down memory lane. Recalling how much my parents talked about Calloway and his music while I was growing up in the Bronx gave me warm memories and feelings of pride and joy. Coinciding with the opening of the African-American Museum in Washington, D.C, news of Calloway’s home now being on the market is timely.
There is a display of Calloway, the jazz singer and bandleader, that explains how much this talented entertainer contributed to American jazz, zoot suit fashions and Harlem’s Cotton Club’s history. Calloway was very popular and rose to his career heights from the 1930s to the late 1940s.
Located in Fieldston’s Estates, this charming Tudor property is registered in a Historic Landmark district and was built in 1932. Throughout, the Calloway home is enhanced with leaded glass windows, a simply elegant living room, a formal dining room and private terraces, one off the kitchen and another off the living room. Of course, there is a study/music room that contains his piano and features a fireplace. Walking through, you can just imagine the guests and entertaining that flowed richly through the building. There are many period pieces of furniture, mature paintings and lots of privacy.
Calloway was a man of many talents. He performed regularly at the Cotton Club, and his band featured several greats, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Adolphus “Doc” Cheatham and more. He received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2008, along with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. He was inducted into the Band and Jazz Hall of Fame and was awarded the Outer Critics Award for Best Performance in the “Hello, Dolly” musical in 1967. It’s just a treat to walk through the open houses of African-American giants, such as the late Madam C. J. Walker’s home in Irvington, N.Y., and now the late Calloway’s home, in one’s lifetime.
His Riverdale home features 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 3,200 square feet, for $2,100,000.
